EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
